Rafael Benitez has insisted his side must stay ‘solid’ against Liverpool this weekend.

The Reds have had an hit-and-miss start to the new season, however have been applauded by many for their marvellous attacking displays.

While their defence has been a weakness so far this campaign, Benitez remains aware that Jurgen Klopp’s side have plenty to offer going forward, something he says his side will need to try and combat on Sunday at St James’ Park.

“People say they’re weak in defence but they’re so strong in attack they can score goals in any game.” said Benitez speaking with the Chronicle.

“They have a lot of chances in every game. The main thing for us to stay solid and not give them so many.

“We can talk about whether they defend well or not, but not if they attack badly because they will still get chances, so we have to be solid.

“They’re very offensive and normally they have a lot of chances so it will be a tough game.”

Benitez managed Liverpool between 2004 to 2010, guiding the Reds to a memorable Champions League trophy in 2005, as well as an FA Cup a year later, and the Spaniard wishes similar success for current boss Jurgen Klopp, however only after the weekend’s clash.

“Hopefully they can continue doing well, but after Sunday.” he said. “It depends on his team. I think he’s dong well.”

“We had six years and won four trophies so it was quite a good period. I think he has the tools and potential.”
