Newcastle legend Peter Beardsley has praised loan stars Sean Longstaff and Ivan Toney after their impressive starts away from the Tyneside.

Longstaff, who is with League One’s Blackpool, and Toney, now with Wigan Athletic, has impressed the former Newcastle United striker and he hopes both can work their way into Rafael Benitez’s plans upon their return to St James’ Park.

“It’s brilliant for him. But to get four in four games was really good for him.” Beardsley told the Chronicle when asked about Longstaff’s brilliant start at Blackpool.

“He’s a really good lad and I have never doubted that. With all due respect and without being negative – and we have seen it with Adam Armstrong – they can score goals in the EFL but the Premier League will it be today or even tomorrow?

“Probably not, but I don’t mean that badly, because it’s only good news.”

“It’s the same for Ivan Toney at Wigan, it’s great news. We send the lads out to try to improve them and get them better.” he added.

“The more experience they can get with good people the better. I know Gary Bowyer at Blackpool and he’s a good man who will look after Sean. Paul Cook will look after Ivan.

“They are both delighted with what they have got and I know at Bolton are happy with Arma. It’s not always possible but we try to choose the best place for them.”
