Achraf Lazaar has slammed his parent club Newcastle United after moving to Serie A side Benevento on a season-long loan.

The Morrocon joined the Magpies back in the summer of 2016 from Palermo, but made only 9 appearances in what was a frustrating debut campaign in England.

Speaking recently, Lazaar has criticised his former boss Rafael Benitez for creating what he called a ‘nightmare’ year at St James Park.

“My signing for Benevento was the end of a nightmare,” Lazaar told reporters (via Football Italia).

“At Newcastle I never played and over a whole year Benitez never gave me an explanation.

“All he said was that I was a player more suited to Serie A or the Premier League, rather than the Championship.”

Lazaar also said that is was Benitez who convinced him the join the Magpies, with the Spaniard extrmely keen on the then Palermo full-back, however he ultimately regretted his decision and believes it will be a year to forget as he looks to move on with his career,

“It’s a shame because he really wanted me. I was about to sign for Fiorentina when he called me and told me to go to him.

“They were just words, what a disappointment.”
