Newcastle defender DeAndre Yedlin has revealed he didn’t return sooner to action because he had to ‘110%’ after suffering a recurring hamstring problem.

The USA international had been out of action since July when he limped off the club’s pre-season friendly against Mainz, and while he was close to returning again just before the start of the season, Yedlin suffered a repeat injury which left him out for a number of weeks again.

After making his long awaited comeback in the victory against Stoke City this weekend, the former Spurs star has revealed he was thrilled to make his comeback after a frustrating summer.

“It was great,” said Yedlin speaking in the Shield Gazette, “Obviously, coming back from a hamstring injury isn’t easy, because you have to take them pretty slow and be pretty careful with them, especially when you’re the type of player I am.

“It’s one of my necessities to make sure I have my leg muscles as close to 100% as they can be.

“It was great be back and great to come back on a win. I thought the team played pretty well. There were a couple of moments where we slipped up a bit, but I thought, for the most part, that we dominated the game and played very well.”

Yedlin also went on to express his frustration at not being able to return earlier, however felt the extra time on the sidelines was necessary to ensure he didn’t injury himself further.

“I’d actually been injured in the very beginning of pre-season,” he said.

“I came back for a bit, probably about 10 days, and then I did it again. “That’s why it’s been a pretty long process getting back. It’s my second hamstring injury.

“We wanted to make sure it was 110% before I came back, so it didn’t reoccur.”
