Former Newcastle midfielder Jermaine Jenas has praised ‘hungry’ Jamaal Lascelles after his performances in recent weeks.

The defender has scored the winner in each of his last two appearances against both Swansea and Stoke, helping his side to three consecutive victories, and Jenas has hailed the captain’s leadership after the Magpies strong start to the season.

“I know Jamaal from his time at Forest, he was hungry then, had the right appetite and the right mentality for the job,” Jenas told BT Sport (via the Chronicle), “I felt that last year in winning the league, he was instrumental and I think the rest of the team – they really look up to him and kind of know they can lean on him in times of need and his last two performances have just been sensational.

“Not only from a football point of view but get two winners from centre half, you don’t lead by example any than that from centre-half.”

Newcastle travel to Brighton on Sunday, and both Lascelles and Jenas will be hoping for more of the same.
