Former Newcastle United midfielder has condoned Tomer Hemed’s ‘stamp’ on DeAndre Yedlin after revealing he believes the Brighton forward’s challenge was no accident but should be not be punished by the FA.

The Israel striker was seen to stamp down on Yedlin’s leg after a 50/50 challenge late on in the Magpies 1-0 loss at the Amex Stadium, however the incident was missed by referee Andre Marriner and hence could be reviewed by the FA.

Despite Hemed being heavily criticised for the challenge with it drawing similarities to Jonjo Shelvey’s on Dele Alli a few weeks back for which the Newcastle midfielder faced a three game ban, Barton believes the Brighton star should be allowed to ‘get on with it’.

“He’ll probably get done for it. He could have avoided it but gets away with it, they win the game – he scores the goal.” said Barton speaking on TalkSPORT (via the Chronicle).

“He’s probably going to get done – there’s a bit of needle beforehand; he might be able to argue the case and get away with that.

“The FA are going to have to prove he actually tried to stamp on him, it is not up to him to prove it; it doesn’t look conclusive when you look at the evidence.“You can see both sides of the argument. I don’t like to see players get banned – they had a bit of needle, he maybe could have avoided it but look just let him get on with it.”

Hemed has since publicly apologised to Yedlin for the challenge, labelling it an ‘accident’.
