Within their Football Whispers round-up, the Daily Mail claim Everton could allow James McCarthy to join Newcastle United this summer.

Swansea City midfielder Gyfli Sigurdsson is expected to join the Toffees as one of the Premier League transfer sagas of the summer comes to a close, which may push them into selling the Republic of Ireland international.

Not too much detail is given, though McCarthy has been linked with a move up to Tyneside before.

Central midfield could certainly use some bolstering before now and the end of August, especially with Jonjo Shelvey proving to be a liability in the season opener against Tottenham Hotspur.

Jack Colback’s career in black and white looks to be coming to a close after a reported training ground bust-up with Rafa Benitez, so the Irishman certainly would help provide more options.

Though Everton’s rebuild looks to have forced McCarthy out, he’s undoubtedly a midfielder of Premier League quality and would represent a coup for a Newcastle side struggling to wholly improve during the summer window.
