Newcastle United round off their pre-season schedule at home to Hellas Verona later today, just a week before Tottenham Hotspur travel up to St. James’ Park to kick off the Premier League campaign.
It’s been a relatively productive warm up to life back in the top tier of English football for the Toon Army, with new signings impressing under Rafa Benitez. Indeed, the squad looked in particularly good shape during the 3-1 win over in Wolfsburg earlier this week and today presents an opportunity for a few players to impress the boss ahead of the new season.
Last term, Benitez didn’t tend to mix things up all that often. While injuries and the like caused him to mix his pack last time out, it’s not hard to imagine the 57-year-old sticking to a relatively similar XI over the course of the campaign.
With that in mind, today’s game against the Serie A outfit represents one final chance for a few players on the periphery of the first-team to impress.
