It proved a relatively disappointing day for Newcastle United upon their return to the Premier League.
While Tottenham’s 2-0 win at St. James’ Park looked rather routine in the end, Rafa Benitez’s side performed well for much of the game and managed to keep Spurs’ devastating attack at bay.
However, injuries to both Paul Dummett and Florian Lejeune, as well as the utterly stupid red card shown to Jonjo Shelvey made the Magpies’ task an almost impossible one and Tottenham duly ran out winners.
Still, there are plenty of reasons to be optimistic for the Toon Army. Indeed, summer signings Christian Atsu and Javier Manquillo proved impressive upon their Premier League bows for Newcastle United.
Much has been made about the club’s lack of summer spending since promotion from the Championship, though two recruits (though Atsu was with the club on loan last term) played well today.
