While Newcastle United may not have been able to bring in all too many players over the course of the summer, there’s one area of the squad that looks to have been significantly improved.

Indeed, the arrival of Florian Lejeune from Eibar has given Rafa Benitez a better ball-playing option in central defence and the Frenchman joins Ciaran Clark, Jamaal Lascelles and Chancel Mbemba as potential players to fill those roles.

Fellow summer signing Mikel Merino can also be deployed in central defence, posing the question, should the Magpies boss trial out a three man defence next season?

Antonio Conte’s Chelsea side won the Premier League at a relative canter last term after deploying such a system, a trend that grew throughout English football, even up to the national side.

Tactical fluidity will be key for the Magpies next season, especially if the relative transfer impasse continues, so trailing out the option may be a wise move and there’s certainly the players to switch to three-man back line.

So, should Newcastle switch to three at the back?
