Though the 0-2 scoreline may have looked relatively routine in the end, Newcastle United’s performance at home to Tottenham Hotspur raised plenty of reasons to be optimistic.

Despite the summer window proving frustrating at St. James’ Park, the home side did well to hold off Spurs for swathes of proceedings on Tyneside, until Jonjo Shelvey was rightly sent off for his petulant stamp on Dele Alli.

However, few would doubt how solid those in black and white looked up until that point and, even when given a mountain to climb, there are certainly reasons to be excited for the season ahead.

Losing to last season’s runners up – a side with what is largely cited as the best starting XI in the league – when down to ten men and losing two key defenders isn’t the end of the world, after all.

With that in mind, here are a few reasons not to be too disheartened after today.
