Yesterday proved to be a relatively busy day on the transfer rumour front for Newcastle United, as they prepare for a return to the Premier League tomorrow.

Indeed, reports from Nigeria touted them with a slightly left field move for Austria Wien forward Olarenwaju Kayode, who was said to be close to joining the Magpies ‘within a matter of days’.

The 17-goal marksman may be an unknown quantity on these shores, though the Toon Army were said to be confident they could obtain a work permit for the Nigerian international. However, now, reports from Own Goal Nigeria hint at more transfer frustration.

It’s no secret that Newcastle have missed out on targets this summer. Rafa Benitez has publically admitted he’s unhappy and, according to this report, that trend could continue.

They claim Premier League powerhouses Manchester City have swooped in for the Super Eagles’ ace after Pep Guardiola personally intervened. Kayode is believed to have arrived in England for talks with the Toon Army, though a phone call from the ex-Barcelona and Bayern Munich boss is said to have swung it into City’s favour.

He’s already reported to have passed his medical with the Sky Blues and will apparently be loaned out to City’s sister club, Girona.

It this report is to be believed, Newcastle’s hunt for a striker continues, having also missed out on Tammy Abraham.
