One of the most divisive stories amid Newcastle United’s reasonably slow summer transfer window has centered around Dwight Gayle.
The man who fired the Magpies to promotion last season started the first two games in their Premier League campaign, without ever really looking as if he’d threaten either Tottenham Hotspur or Huddersfield Town.
With both Joselu and Aleksandar Mitrovic notching against West Ham United in the most recent game, the former Crystal Palace man has been linked with a move away from St. James’ Park.
Naturally, he’s a pretty popular figure on Tyneside, though him leaving may free up room for another arrival.
So, what exactly is the problem with Gayle? Is he not good enough to lead the line in the Premier League? Or is the fact he was deployed as the only striker an issue?
Personally, I believe Gayle has a lot to offer if he’s partnered with a more physical option. While he may not do enough to get himself into scoring positions at this level often enough, the 26-year-old would be a good option to bring on when chasing the game.
Running off either Mitrovic or Joselu, his 35% shot accuracy in Premier League competition may not sound overly prolific, though could help the Magpies in tight games towards the end of the campaign.
So, with that in mind, what do you think is the problem?
