Newcastle United ‘keeper Freddie Woodman has been promoted to the England U21 set-up after impressing Gareth Southgate, report the Chronicle

The custodian helped the England U20 side win the World Cup for their age group earlier this summer, expertly saving a penalty in the final against Venezuela and has been touted for big things in the future.

Indeed, the stopper has been linked with moves away from St. James’ Park of late and, while his club future may not be clear, his international one certainly looks promising.

A glowing report in regards to the 20-year-old is understood to have landed on Southgate’s desk and the Three Lions chief is believed to have personally watched him at St. George’s Park,

He may face a battle to oust the likes of Jordan Pickford and Jack Butland in the long-term, though big things are expected of Woodman, who is reportedly aiming to go out on loan this summer.

“I’m moving up to the England Under-21s now and we’ve got qualifiers coming up against Latvia and Holland”, he said.

“It’s great to be back on the international scene and move on to the next chapter after winning the World Cup with England last summer.

“Now I’m ready to take things forward. Gareth Southgate has been absolutely brilliant with me.

He’s currently third choice under Rafa Benitez, so another loan move could help him further his development.
