Benfica are weighing up a move for Newcastle United ‘keeper Tim Krul as a cheap option to strengthen their options between the sticks, according to Portuguese outlet A Bola

Indeed, the Dutchman is understood to have been sidelined by Rafa Benitez, who didn’t allocate him a squad number for life back in the Premier League. With the likes of Karl Darlow, Rob Elliot and Freddie Woodman currently battling it out for the No.1 spot at St. James’ Park, the 29-year-old is the odd man out.

Krul himself is thought to be keen on moving to the Portuguese capital due to the club’s participation in the Champions League, though isn’t believed to be their first choice.

PSV custodian Jeroen Zoet is said to have been eyed as the Lisbon giants search for a replacement for Ederson, who joined Manchester City for a world record fee earlier this summer.

However, he’s reported to be a tad too expensive for Benfica, so Krul is apparently emerging as an alternative. Still, it doesn’t look like he’ll come cheap.

Despite being frozen out of the picture on Tyneside, Newcastle are thought to be looking for around €5.5m – roughly £5.04m – for a man who penned a new deal only last summer in black and white.
