St Etienne have refused to match the wages of Massadio Haidara and pulled out of a deal to sign the defender.

According to a report in The Chronicle matching Haidara’s wages would have made him the highest paid player at the club.

While Neymar prepares to start a £500,000/week contract with Paris St Germain paying £22,500/week for Haidara is way out of budget for St Etienne.

With half a dozen players in similar circumstances it seems that there is little prospect of Newcastle raising funds from selling players with free transfers or pay off’s needed to clear the decks.

Haidara signed a five year deal when he joined from Nancy on 2013 with the 24 year old playing for just 77 minutes of last season’s Championship winning campaign.

Having spent £31m on signing five new players without selling anyone it’s believed that Newcastle’s spending plans have been put on hold until some players can be offloaded.
