With quotes sourced by the Chronicle, Newcastle United star Karl Darlow IS available for sale this summer.

The 26-year-old was a key figure during the Magpies’ promotion-winning campaign last term, making 34 appearances after Rafa Benitez dropped last season’s summer signing, Matz Sels.

However, Benitez is understood to be looking for a new stopper to compete for a starting berth between the sticks, with Darlow reportedly seen as an expendable figure on Tyneside. Bids are thought to have been rejected from Middlesbrough this summer, though that doesn’t seem to mean the ex-Nottingham Forest custodian will definitely be staying.

Still, while Benitez has confirmed his side are open to offers for the player, Darlow must compete for a first-team spot with Rob Elliot and Freddie Woodman while he is still at the club.

”I was explaining to our three keepers the situations. Rob knows he must compete to be number one”, Benitez told the Sunday Sun (via the Chronicle).

”Darlow: he knew we were open for offers and at the moment, he knows he must stay and fight to do his best to compete.”

Tim Krul is believed to have been told to find a new club while Newcastle chase an experienced ‘keeper between now and the end of the summer.
