Newcastle are in a stand off with Everton over James McCarthy.

According to a report in The Daily Star Everton are refusing to discuss any deal under £25m.

Newcastle made an enquiry about the midfielder in January but with Everton light on numbers they refused to discuss a deal.

Despite Ronald Koeman’s spending spree he is in no rush to sell McCarthy even though he has a number of new midfield options.

Leicester and West Brom are also interested in the former Wigan midfielder with Rafa Benitez looking to add a forceful central midfielder to his squad.

Koeman also has to factor Ross Barkley into his plans but so far there has been little concrete interest in the midfielder who has a year left on his contract.

So far Benitez has kept his signings around the £10m mark but the Newcastle boss is expected to break the club record transfer fee of £17m paid for Michael Owen from Real Madrid in 2005.
