Everton have beaten off a late bid from Tottenham to sign Lewis Gibson.

According to a report in The Sun the London side made a late bid to hi-jack their £6m deal to sign the former Newcastle defender.

As soon as Gibson rejected the offer of a professional contract the club was forced into dealing with the departure of the 17-year-old.

Everton were quickly on the scene with the offer of a lucrative contract that would see Gibson move into the u-23 squad coached by David Unsworth.

Newcastle were keen to hold on to the defender but weren’t prepared to match the money on offer from Everton.

The Goodison club have one of the most successful Academy set ups in the game but that could be under threat with Ronald Koeman on a summer spending spree.

Newcastle have negotiated an up front fee for the defender with the full fee of £6m dependent on Gibson’s progress through the ranks.
