Newcastle have missed out on the signing of Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

The Chelsea midfielder is poised to join Crystal Palace on a season long loan despite interest from Newcastle and Brighton.

Rather than uproot himself to the north east the midfielder has opted for a cross London switch and became Frank de Boer’s first signing since taking over from Sam Allerdyce at Crystal Palace.

Rafa Benitez has put an emphasis on bringing in experienced players but was happy to make an exception for the Chelsea youngster who spent last season watching from Antonio Conte’s bench.

Loftus-Cheek hasn’t been out on loan before but with N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic about to be joined by Tiermoue Bakayoko there’s next to no chance of making a breakthrough next season.

Rafa Benitez also missed out on a bid to take Tammy Abraham on loan from Chelsea and is unlikely to be making any moves for other potential loan deals from his old club.
