Newcastle are monitoring Ben Gibson’s situation at Middlesbrough.

According to a report in The Telegraph, Rafa Benitez is keen on bringing the defender up the road to St James’ Park.

Gibson is in a group of young defenders that includes Harry Maguire of Hull and Michael Keane of Burnley that are expected to be on the move this summer.

The 24-year-old is on the fringes of the England squad and knows that he has to be playing in the Premier League to stand a chance of making next summer’s World Cup squad.

Leaving Middlesbrough would have obvious complications for the nephew of the club owner but a £20m bid would certainly cushion the blow and is within Newcastle’s price range.

New Boro boss Garry Monk wants to hold on to Gibson but is likely to have to settle for a major boost to his transfer budget with the defender staying in the Premier League and Gareth Southgate’s sight lines.
