Stoke City are set to rival Newcastle for the signing of Jeison Murillo.

According to a report in the Daily Mail the Inter Milan defender is in Mark Hughes’ thoughts as a new contract for Ryan Shawcross remains unsigned. Ironically Shawcross, who has a year left on his current deal has also been linked with a move to Newcastle.

Murillo hasn’t fallen out of favour with Inter but to comply with FFP the Italian side has to bring in transfer money with a £15m tag slapped on the Columbian defender.

Newcastle remain confident that they will bring Eibar defender Florian Lejeune but Rafa Benitez is looking for more than one central defender for the return to the Premier League.

At 25 years of age Murillo has the sort of pedigree that Benitez is looking for with two seasons at Inter in the bank as well as well 25 international caps for Columbia.
