Newcastle goalkeeper Matz Sels is seeking to leave St James’ Park after just one season, according to Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad (via NUFCblog.co.uk).

The Belgian has slipped down the pecking order under Rafa Benitez this season. Starting the season as first choice after his £6.5million from Gent last summer, the 25 year old lasted just nine league games before being replaced by Karl Darlow.

After Rob Elliot’s return from a serious knee injury at the start of the year, Sels has failed to make the bench for a league match since the 2-2 draw with QPR in early February.

Instead the Belgian international has played for the Under 23 side on occasion with three appearances coming in games against Norwich, West Ham and Fulham in March and April.

With the return of Tim Krul and Freddie Woodman from loan spells in the summer, Sels will have four other keepers to contend with in the first team squad, and it seems he feels that he maybe better off leaving and getting more game time elsewhere.
