Newcastle and Crystal Palace are pursuing a deal for Burnley forward Ashley Barnes, according to ESPN FC.

Sources close to the player have told the website that both the Magpies and the Eagles are tracking the 27 year old with Rafa Benitez believed to be keen to buy a forward with Premier League experience to strengthen the forward line.

The Chronicle have reported in recent days that Daryl Murphy could leave St James’ Park this summer after just one season at the club, and Barnes could be seen as a younger, more mobile replacement for the Irishman.

The striker is known for his work rate and aggression; something that Newcastle could do with if Benitez is keen to press the ball from the front.

The Magpies manager is probably not eyeing the former Brighton player for his goal record. In 30 appearances in all competitions this season, Barnes has scored six times, as well as providing three assists.
