Rafa Benitez believes that there are four clubs that can provide a blueprint to where Newcastle need to go in the Premier League.

In an interview with The Chronicle the Newcastle boss explained the different tiers of the top division and where he sees Newcastle heading.

With a positive outcome to his budget talks with Mike Ashley the former Real Madrid boss can plan ahead to Premier League football in August.

While the top six clubs look out of reach there is another clutch of teams that Benitez wants to get in amongst.

The big boys they are quite far ahead at the moment,” he told The Chronicle. “We have seen a lot of games this season.

You see Crystal Palace, West Brom, Southampton and Stoke that are quite strong.

They have an advantage because they have been in the Premier League for a few years and have all the money that is involved with that.”

He added: “We have to be sure we keep working in terms of football.

We have to make sure we lay the foundations to make sure we can build. Those foundations need to be strong so that we can build as high as we can.”

With the budget details confirmed Benitez will get to work immediately at recruiting the type of players that will take Newcastle into that middle group of clubs that are well clear of the relegation dogfight.

Getting that first signing right will set the standard with all areas of the team ready to be strengthened with the profile of Benitez a big draw as the Spaniard enters the transfer market.
