Newcastle have prioritised the signing of Bournemouth forward Joshua King this summer, according to the Northern Echo.

The local newspaper reports that manager Rafa Benitez has been given transfer funds in the region of £80million to strengthen the Magpies squad for the Premier League.

Improving the frontline is believed to be the Spaniard’s number one priority after the club encountered issues with top goalscorer Dwight Gayle this campaign after the 27 year old picked up a series of hamstring injuries.

Veteran forward Daryl Murphy may leave the club this summer, the Chronicle reports, leaving Newcastle with just Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic remaining as recognised strikers, with Ayoze Perez having been used in a withdrawn role over the course of the Championship season.

King has had an excellent season for the Cherries in the Premier League, scoring as many goals as he has done in his entire professional career combined. The Norwegian international has scored 16 goals in 36 Premier League games this campaign.
