Newcastle are “near” the signing of Leganes midfielder Gabriel Pires, according to Marca.

The Spanish newspaper say the Brazilian has a release clause of between €6m and €7m and the Magpies are reportedly prepared to make an offer to bring him to St James’ Park.

Manager Rafa Benitez was believed to be interested in the 23 year old during the January transfer window but a move did not materialise due to Newcastle being in the Championship rather than the Premier League.

Pires has had a pretty decent season during his first campaign playing in La Liga. In 36 appearances in all competitions, the midfielder scored five goals and provided two assists.

He moved to Europe from Brazil in 2012 to play for Juventus. He never played for the Bianconeri first team and was loaned out to a number of clubs, including Pro Vercelli, Pescara, Spezia, Livorno and Leganes before joining the Spanish club permanently for £850,000 last summer.
