Newcastle have set their sights on signing Manchester City midfielder Fernando, according to the Daily Mail.

The Brazilian has been a bit-part player under manager Pep Guardiola this season, having made just 14 appearances in the Premier League. The 29 year old joined from Porto for £12million in 2014, and was used regularly by previous manager Manuel Pellegrini.

Despite making appearances in four competitions this campaign, the midfielder has made just ten starts under Guardiola, and he has been used sparingly since the New Year. He has made just three brief substitute appearances in the league in the lat five months, and has started just one match, coming in the FA Cup tie against Huddersfield Town.

The reintegration of Yaya Toure back into the first team squad in the mid November has contributed hugely to Fernando’s lack of game time in recent months, and Newcastle’s offer of first team football could be an attractive proposition for a player who looks destined to depart the Etihad stadium in the summer.
