Newcastle are interested in pursuing a deal for Everton midfielder James McCarthy, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The Irish international has struggled with injuries this season, with a groin strain sidelining him earlier on in the campaign and a recurring hamstring injury, picked up in mid December, continuing to plague him over the past few months.

In March, he was injured whilst on international duty and his manager Ronald Koeman read out an extraordinary statement at a press conference criticising both the player and Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill for their failure to manage his injury.

O’Neill replied the same day by then attacking Everton’s medical team for McCarthy’s current injury problems, highlighting the 26 year old’s lack of a break between the European Championships last summer, and the start of the season. Koeman then left this reply on his Twitter account questioning O’Neill’s grasp of the facts.

Combined with a manager that seeming lacks trust in him, and the fact he has made just 12 appearances all campaign, McCarthy may be seeking a way out from Goodison Park this summer.
