Werder Bremen defender Luca Caldirola is on Newcastle’s radar, according to Sky Sports Deutschland (via Tuttomercartoweb). They will however have to fight off both Stoke City and Huddersfield Town to sign the centre half.

The Italian worked with current Magpies boss Rafa Benitez when he was manager of Inter Milan back in 2010, although he was loaned out to Vitesse Arnhem during the Spaniard’s only season in charge at the Giuseppe Meazza.

The centre back moved to Bremen for €2.5million in 2013 but was loaned out last season to Darmstadt where he played in all 34 Bundesliga matches.

He returned to his parent club at the start of this season, but he has suffered two major injuries this campaign, suffering ligament damage earlier in the season, before breaking a metatarsal in a league match against Eintracht Frankfurt at the start of last month.

The 26 year old is left footed, and can play as a left back, and he would no doubt be seen as cover for the club’s standout performer this season Ciaran Clark.
