Newcastle utility player Vurnon Anita says he would like to stay with the Magpies but it is down to the club to make him an offer so he can remain on Tyneside.

The Dutch international’s current deal expires in the summer and the club are believed to be unlikely to give the 28 year old an extension without the player willing to take a pay cut. When asked about whether he would like to stay, Anita told the Daily Express:

“Of course, but it’s not up to me. I am open to everything. I will see what happens. If the group stays together it’s a beautiful thing, but in football you never know what happens.”

Newcastle winger Yoan Gouffran is also in the same boat as Anita. Both have played over 30 games in the Championship this campaign but the Magpies were paying them wages more befitting of the Premier League.

With the club returning to the top flight, the players may feel that they can now negotiate to stay at St James’ Park but it remains to be seen whether the club or manager Rafa Benitez are looking to extend their stay or free up their wages to spend on new signings instead.
