Newcastle will be offered a chance to sign Southampton forward Jay Rodriguez this summer, according to the Chronicle.

The 27 year old’s agent has reportedly already asked the Magpies whether the club would be interested in making a move for the former England international. The striker is likely to leave St Mary’s in the summer after struggling to establish himself as a first team regular under manager Claude Puel.

Rodriguez has fallen behind Manolo Gabbiadini, Charlie Austin and Shane Long in the pecking order for a central striking role, and has also found his opportunities limited for playing in wider areas with Dusan Tadic, Nathan Redmond and Sofiane Boufal having been preferred this season.

The forward’s career has been hampered by a serious knee injury which took him almost a whole year to recover from. He has been fit for the whole of this season though, but he has made just 16 starts this campaign, scoring six goals in all competitions.
