Alan Shearer has cautiously welcomed news that Rafa Benitez is staying on as Newcastle manager after the showdown talks with Mike Ashley.

Word emerged on Wednesday that the two biggest personalities at the club had enjoyed a cordial meeting aimed at agreeing on next season’s targets and spending plans.

It seems that Benitez won’t be getting the £100m budget that he had hoped for but will have the funds to ensure significant investment in the team for next season.

Shearer has been inside and outside the club since Ashley took control and will wait to see which players arrive at St James’ Park before starting to celebrate.

Speaking in a video to Coral Official the Match of the Day pundit said: “Mike has promised that there is big funds for Rafa to spend which is great news, but actions speak louder than words.

We will have to wait and see whether that will happen, but hopefully it will, and it is all good news for Newcastle.”

After difficulties during the January transfer window, highlighted by the failure to sign Andros Townsend there was some fears that Benitez might walk out on the club if his ambitions weren’t matched.

Having finally got a blue chip manager to St James’ Park it seems that Ashley can trust Benitez with the budget to make Newcastle competitive again.
