Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez is hoping his meeting with owner Mike Ashley goes well this week, and that they can settle any differences over the club’s plans for the new season.

Asked about what he expects to happen during discussions with Ashley, Benitez was quoted by the Chronicle as saying:

I have an idea already, I think he has an idea. Now we have to put both ideas together and hopefully it will be fine this week.”

The Magpies boss will have a strong hand heading into talks after clinching the Championship title on the final day of the season after a 3-0 win over Barnsley yesterday.

The main bone of contention will likely be the size of the club’s transfer budget. Chronicle sources say a figure near to the £100m mark could be on the cards, but there are so far no concrete numbers.

Benitez will want the ability to transform his squad so as to be able to compete in the Premier League, and with eight first team players being seen as the level required to establish themselves in the top flight, Ashley will be under pressure to give Benitez a sizeable transfer kitty to satisfy the Spaniard’s demands.
