Newcastle midfielder Dan Barlaser says he is hoping for more chances after being given a taste of first team action by Rafa Benitez this season.

The 20 year old was given two starts by the Magpies boss against Birmingham City and Oxford United in the FA Cup back in January, and he is now keen to get more minutes in the the first team eleven. He told the Chronicle:

“If somebody had offered me two appearances for the first team this season I would have snapped their fingers off. I am really happy to get to that situation. Now I just keep myself fit and play for the Under-23s and wait for my chance.”

Barlaser qualifies to play for Turkey because of his father, although he was born in Gateshead, and his name has been mentioned as a possible transfer target for Turkish champions Besiktas. So far in his career, the youngster has played at youth level for Turkey both at Under 16 and Under 17 level, but he has made appearances for England as well.

Talking to the Chronicle, Barlaser thinks he may need to go out on loan in order to gain recognition at international level again:

“If I get to play first team football, maybe on loan somewhere, I might have a chance to play regularly at international level.”
