Newcastle United will look to focus on strengthening the spine of the side as they seek new signings in the summer transfer market, according to Chronicle reporter Mark Douglas.

Four key positions have been identified with six signings for the first team being lined up in total. The centre of defence, the centre of midfield, the forward line and the wings are where manager Rafa Benitez is looking to add numbers to.

Much will depend on the Magpies’ being promoted to the Premier League, but if they do achieve an instant return to the top flight, Benitez feels that the club need six new first team players to cope against elite clubs.

Certainly Newcastle’s 2-1 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday at the weekend will have focused minds among the recruitment staff, and it seems that currently owner Mike Ashley is keen to keep Benitez on side, and will back him to make the signings required during the summer once promotion is secured.
