Newcastle striker Daryl Murphy did not mince his words after the Magpies succumbed to a disappointing 3-1 loss to Ipswich Town yesterday.

Speaking to the Shields Gazette, the 34 year old felt it was the team’s worst performance of the season, and that the the whole squad need to up their game:

“First half, we were absolutely awful all over the pitch. It was probably the worst we’ve played. Second half, we got a goal back and then we came into the game a bit more. We were on top, and then conceded another goal. I just knocked us back. It’s not good enough, really.”

The defeat was particularly bitter for Murphy who was facing his old club for the first time. He missed the first encounter between the two clubs at St James’ Park earlier in the season due to a calf injury.

As is so often the case, the Irish international managed to get on the scoresheet against his old club, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Newcastle suffering another setback in their attempts to seal promotion.

Huddersfield’s draw against Derby means the Magpies are still close to securing an automatic promotion spot but a much better performance will be required against Preston on Monday night.
