Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has explained why Brighton & Hove Albion have eased to promotion to the Premier League while the Magpies seem to be stumbling over the line.

Benitez side’s 3-1 defeat to Ipswich Town yesterday means Newcastle are now seven points behind the Seagulls despite being top of the league only a couple of weeks ago. The Magpies loss of form shouldn’t jeopardise the club’s automatic promotion prospects after Huddersfield drew at Derby County yesterday evening, yet recent performances have concerned Newcastle fans.

Magpies boss Benitez believes the fact that Brighton have been in and around the promotion place for four of the last five years in the Championship gives them a massive edge in terms of experience. He is quoted by the Chronicle as saying:

“Brighton have been in this situation challenging for promotion four times in the last five years. This is the fifth time that they have been in this position. Does that make a difference? It is simple.”

Newcastle’s next fixture on Monday night against Preston North End now has extra importance, and with five points still needed to ensure promotion, Magpies fans will be hopeful of securing three of those against the Lilywhites at St James’ Park.
