Newcastle striker Dwight Gayle is refusing to accept that the Magpies’ promotion to the Premier League is already in the bag.

Speaking to the Shields Gazette, the 26 year old said it is still possible that third placed Huddersfield Town could put together a run of wins which could trouble Newcastle in the run in:

“You can’t take anything for granted in this league. Huddersfield are a great team and they could easily go on a run where they don’t lose. We need to concentrate and pick up enough points to get promoted.”

With their game in hand over the Magpies, Huddersfield still could reach 95 points if they win their last eight matches, meaning that Newcastle currently require five more wins to be completely certain of promotion back to the top flight.

David Wagner’s side still have to face Norwich City, Fulham and Derby County before the end of the season though, and it is likely Newcastle will need fewer than 96 points in order to ensure a top two finish.

The next round of fixtures see Huddersfield face Norwich, while the Magpies have a home game against Burton Albion tomorrow night.
