Newcastle will rival West Bromwich Albion for Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez, according to the Daily Mail.

The England international has made 30 appearances this season, and scored five goals, although only 12 of them have been starts as Saints boss Claude Puel has chopped and changed his strikers. Manolo Gabbiadini, Charlie Austin and Shane Long have also been vying for the sole striking role this campaign.

An injury to Austin meant that Rodriguez remained at St Mary’s in January despite interest from West Brom. The Baggies reportedly offered £12million for the 27 year old but Southampton opted to keep the forward to provide cover.

Since the end of January, Rodriguez has struggled for starts. He provided an assist in the 3-1 defeat to West Ham after starting the match but was substituted at half time by Puel.

His only other Premier League start came at the beginning of this month when he played 63 minutes in the 0-0 home draw against Bournemouth.
