Former Stoke manager Lou Macari thinks it is highly likely that Stoke captain Ryan Shawcross will join Newcastle in the summer.

The 29 year old has one year left on his contract and there has been speculation that the Magpies, along with West Brom and Leicester City, could be considering a bid at the end of the season for the centre back.

Speaking to the Sentinel, Macari questioned whether Shawcross would be interested in a move to St James’ Park, and suggested that it won’t be money that could tempt the defender away from the Bet365 stadium:

“You can never be sure in this day and age, but I’d be amazed if Ryan Shawcross lined up at the start of next season in the black-and-white stripes of Newcastle and not the red-and-white stripes of Stoke City.”

“Gone are the days when a good Stoke player could be lured away by the promise of a much higher wage elsewhere. No disrespect to Newcastle, but I can’t see the attraction of them right now if I’m Ryan Shawcross.”

In addition to questioning whether the Magpies could match Stoke’s offer in monetary terms, Macari goes on to mention that as Shawcross has a young family, he is unlikely to uproot and move further North. He thinks the most likely explanation for the Newcastle link is Shawcross’s agent trying to stir interest in order to get improved terms from Stoke chairman Peter Coates.
