Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez has explained the reasons behind Chancel Mbemba’s selection against Burton Albion on Wednesday night.

The 22 year old had not started a league game since November but was given a start by the Magpies boss in place of Grant Hanley mid week. He was quoted by the Mag as saying:

“We wanted to change a little bit (Mbemba replaced Hanley) and give chances to all the players. He was training well and I think it was the right time to do it.”

The form of first choice defensive pairing Jamaal Lascelles and Ciaran Clark has meant Mbemba has been restricted to just nine games in all competitions this campaign, despite being a regular under Benitez last season.

A knee injury sustained by Clark has meant more opportunities for both Hanley and Mbemba, and while the Scottish international started the 2-1 win over Wigan Athletic at the weekend, the Congolese defender was given his opportunity versus Burton in the 1-0 win.

It remains to be seen whether Mbemba will keep his place in the Newcastle side for the match against Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow.
