Southampton have joined the race to sign Swansea playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson, according to Sky Sports. The Sun reported at the end of last month that Newcastle are also keeping tabs on the Icelandic international.

The Magpies are believed to be seeking more creative players in the summer transfer window, with both Fulham’s Tom Cairney and Nottingham Forest’s Ben Osborn heavily linked, but the Chronicle have dampened talk of any move for Sigurdsson with question marks over whether Newcastle would sanction a £30m plus offer for the 27 year old.

Sigurdsson has been one of the most influential attacking players in the Premier League this season with nine goals and 11 assists in 35 games. He generally plays in a central number 10 role behind a striker, but can also play on either side in a wide forward position.

Sky Sports say Southampton have been tracking Sigurdsson for two years but could now pounce for the midfielder with Swansea flirting with relegation to the Championship.
