Stoke City captain Ryan Shawcross seems to be trying to do one of two things with his latest comments over his future. He is either hinting at a possible switch to the North East or just as likely, he is trying to get an improved contract with the Potters.

Talking to the local newspaper The Sentinel about the links to Newcastle, the 29 year old said he isn’t joining the club, at least not yet:

“I’m not going to Newcastle…at the moment. It’s paper talk. I’ve got a year left on my contract and any time a player comes to the later stages of his contract there’s going to be talk. All I can do is concentrate on Stoke and hopefully play well.”

Shawcross is clearly locked in contract talks with Stoke City, but if a new deal can’t be agreed before the end of the summer, the Potters may want to sell the player rather than allow him to leave for nothing at the end of next season.

The Chronicle have confirmed that Newcastle are looking for a new centre half, and with 286 appearances in the Premier League, Shawcross would no doubt fit the bill for providing the experience needed to improve the team’s defence.
