Newcastle’s top goalscorer Dwight Gayle says he is aiming to be fit for the Magpies last game of the season against Barnsley.

Rafa Benitez’s side will face the Tykes on 7th May, and the 26 year old is hoping he can recover from a hamstring injury so he can take part in Newcastle’s final game of the season. He told the Chronicle:

“I am hoping to. I am trying to get back and be fit for the last game of the season. And I’d love to be involved because I want to be out there playing as much time as I can. Hopefully, I can be out there and enjoy the atmosphere. It will be a really nice day.”

Prior to that game the Magpies will travel to face Cardiff City tomorrow night. After sealing promotion, the focus for the players will be trying to overhaul Brighton at the top of the Championship table.

With the Seagulls playing on Saturday evening, Newcastle can put some added pressure on Chris Hughton’s side by closing to within one point, having been seven points behind at the start of the week.

Cardiff are safe in mid table, and don’t have much to play for, although manager Neil Warnock will likely have his side well prepared for a battle.
