Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles says he knows he still has room to improve as a centre back after some unconvincing performances at the heart of the Magpies defence in the last few matches.

The 23 year old has been ever-present in Rafa Benitez’s side this season as they gained promotion back to the Premier League, but indifferent recent form has seen the club fail to keep a clean sheet in the last four matches. Asked about his own form by the Chronicle, Lascelles replied:

“I will always do my best. I am still young, still 23. I still have a lot to improve on. I know that, everybody knows that, the manager knows that. But I am a listener and a learner. I will always work hard. With a great manager like Rafa Benitez, I am sure I will improve. I want to help take this massive club as high as we possibly can.”

After securing promotion back to the top flight, Lascelles’s team have set their set their sights on catching Brighton & Hove Albion at the top of the Championship table.

The Seagulls only need one win to clinch the title but the Magpies will play first on Friday night, and could close the gap at the top to one point before Brighton play next against Bristol City on Saturday evening.
