Newcastle have yet to decide whether to activate their buying option in their loan deal for winger Christian Atsu, according to the Chronicle.

The purchase price is believed to be £6.5million but the Magpies don’t have to activate the clause. The Ghanaian international has just one year left on his contract at his parent club Chelsea and is surplus to requirements.

The 25 year old has started just 13 Championship games this season, but has played 33 games in total, scoring four goals, and providing three assists.

No doubt, his most important contribution in a black and white shirt came against Preston North End on Monday night. His goal put the Magpies 2-1 up to set them on their way to clinch promotion back to the Premier League.

It seems however that his performances this season haven’t convinced manager Rafa Benitez that he is worth taking on a permanent basis, and the Chronicle hints Newcastle may seek out different targets to fill the wing positions in the summer.
