Newcastle goalkeeper Rob Elliot says there were times he felt he would not return to play football after sustaining a serious knee injury last March.
The 30 year old said that his return to first team action after a lengthy layoff was all the sweeter because of the reception he received from the Toon Army. He told the Chronicle that being involved in the match that saw the Magpies promoted back to the Premier League made his first league start of the season special:
“That’s the sort of stuff you dream about. Especially when you first get injured. You don’t even think you can play football again, so just to get back is amazing. I have to say thanks to everybody who has helped me along the way.”
It is not known whether the Irish international will keep his place in goal for tonight’s match against Cardiff City. Karl Darlow has been the club’s number one for most of the season, and Elliot had to wait for his chance to start after returning to full fitness at the back end of January. He had been on the bench for the last 15 league games before finally getting his chance against Preston on Monday night.
