Former Norwich manager Alex Neil says there are two main reasons why Newcastle United will clinch the second automatic promotion spot ahead of Huddersfield Town.

Speaking on the Sky Sports (quotes via the Chronicle), the Scottish coach said that the quality in Newcastle’s squad, combined with the number of games left to play, means it is all in the Magpies’ hands. Neil did say however that Rafa Benitez’s side had been let off the hook by Huddersfield Town who led against Derby County for most of the game before conceding a late equaliser.:

“I think if Huddersfield had have won that game, Newcastle would have been sweating a little bit. But with the limited amount of games left and the quality they have in their squad, I fully expect them to win automatic promotion.”

The Terriers will however be the first to play this weekend when they face Fulham at home on Saturday. The Cottagers have their own ambitions as they seek to secure a playoff spot. If David Wagner’s men do get a win though, it will place some more pressure on Newcastle to ensure they get three points against Preston on Monday night.
