Newcastle forward Dwight Gayle has explained how winger Matt Ritchie plays a critical role in organising the Magpies both on and off the ball.

The 26 year old striker said that Ritchie’s communication on the pitch is vital, telling the team when to press and when to get back into shape. His contributions on the ball have been just as important. Ritchie scored the only goal against Burton Albion on Wednesday night, and Gayle was effusive in his praise of his team mate after the game:

“It’s not just his ability, he is a great character. He is a great and experienced player – he has done this before and he knows what it takes. He is non-stop with his talking to us, telling the boys what needs to be done. He tells the whole team when to press and when to hold. As well as that he is a great lad. And then there’s his goals too.”

Ritchie has been one of the Magpies’ outstanding performers since his £10million move from Bournemouth in the summer. The 27 year old has scored 15 goals, and provided 10 assists in 44 games so far this season.

He is one of the first names on the team sheet for manager Rafa Benitez, and he will surely be in the starting eleven for the match against Sheffield Wednesday tomorrow evening as Newcastle seek another three points for their promotion charge.
